Project overview: We are an interdisciplinary group of researchers funded by a US NSF Macrosystems Biology Program grant (EF-1638679 to MSU; EF-1638554 to UW; EF-1638539 to PSU; and EF-1638550 to UM). Our overarching goal in this project is to understand and predict nutrient patterns for ALL continental US lakes. We will produce the LAGOS-US database that includes measures of in-situ nutrients and water quality measures collected from tens of thousands of lakes and ecological-context metrics calculated using GIS and remote sensing datasets for over a 100,000 lakes in the continental US. This research will help ecologists to better understand the role of inland waters in macroscale nutrient cycling, by developing new approaches to reduce uncertainty in extrapolating site-level estimates to larger geographical scales.
